Hungry Mother State Park

Hungry Mother State Park has to be the best place to camp in southwest Virginia. From Monday, June 29th to Thursday July 2 we camped and had a blast. Campers on this trip were Mamaw Bea, Papaw Earl, Mike, Hailey, Brooke, Betty (arrived on Wed night), Charity, Willie, their children Candace and Dylon, Seth and of course Rick, Mason, Brycen, Parker and myself.

Some of the activities that we enjoyed were:

Bike Riding
Everyone at one point or another rode a bike even Seth with a cast on his foot, there were lots of bike/walking trails to be tackle. However Rick, Mamaw, Papaw, Charity, Brycen and I only tackled one of them. We went on the six mile trail around the lake it took 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete. It was great. We just didn’t have time to go on the other trails during our stay. All the other bike riding was around the camp grounds and to and from the beach area.

Time at the Beach
The beach was nice and the water was cold however I don’t think anyone noticed much. Mamaw and Papaw kept an eye on the sand builders and everyone in the water. Dylon, Hailey, and Parker played in the sand mostly. Candace and Brycen stayed in the water. Mason was in and out. He went fishing with Seth part of the time we were at the beach. Charity talked me into jumping off the diving boards. Let’s just say it is a little scary jumping from nine foot above the water I almost chickened out.

Playground
There was playground equipment next to the beach area. The little ones loved it.

Fishing
Willie and Seth did most of the fishing. Seth has a cast on his foot so he fished while everyone was at the beach. Michael, Papaw, Rick and the boys went fishing some each day. They caught some however they just let them go. Something pulled Mason’s pole into the lake.

Paddle Boats
Four or five to a boat for six dollars for one hour and believe me one hour is enough paddling. On Tuesday Rick, Park, Mason, Seth and I were on one boat, Michael, Papaw, Brooke were on another and Charity, Willie, Candace and Dylon on the other. Mamaw, Brycen and Hailey stayed at camp. Mamaw does not like water so I was not surprised went she volunteered to keep Hailey at camp. Brycen did not want to put down the DS Nintendo at the time we went. On Thursday Betty, Michael, Hailey, and Brooke went out on the paddle boats together.

Eating
We all took too much food and ate too much. Mamaw made breakfast every morning. Breakfast included eggs, bacon, sausage, and gravy. She and Rick fixed dinner. We had hot dogs, hamburgers, spaghetti, and barbeque ribs as our main dishes. Hershey bars were the children’s favorite treat. Two year old Dylon had one for breakfast one morning thanks to me.

Bubbles
At camp the little ones played with bubbles.

Ladder Ball
Wednesday night Charity, Willie, Seth, Rick, Michael, Mason, Brycen and I played ladder ball. Rick and I won the first game however Charity and Willie were on a winning streak. I was glad it got to dark to play and I had an excuse for my playing abilities at the end of our game.

Raft Ride
We took our blow up four man raft with us. Willie and Michael fish from it on Tuesday, Wednesday Charity and I with for a ride in it. We tried to take Dylon and Parker however they were scared and would not ride. Rick, Mason, Parker and I rode the raft on Thursday. It was easier to ride then the paddle boats. We had lots of fun let’s just say we went around in circle a lot I guess our paddling skills are a little off.

Putt Putt Golf
Thursday on our way home just outside of the park in Marion we played putt putt golf. I don’t know who won we kept score however I don’t think anyone’s score was accurate. After our game we got an ice cream and went home.

Over all we had a great time and could have stayed longer however my own bed felt great Thursday night.
